About the Texas Economic Justice for Immigrants Project 

The “Economic Justice for Immigrants” project is a groundbreaking initiative by Texas Immigration Law Council, funded by a three-year grant from the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. This innovative program aims to narrow legal service gaps for low-income immigrants across Texas by deploying over 30 fellows, including both attorneys and Community Justice Workers. In partnership with Equal Justice Works and local service providers, the project will implement cutting-edge strategies to address a wide range of civil law challenges, such as employment, consumer rights, and housing. By fostering collaboration between legal professionals and community-based organizations, this initiative seeks to create sustainable improvements in immigrant access to justice throughout the state. The project not only provides immediate legal assistance but also tests new approaches to develop a more equitable and accessible legal landscape for immigrant communities in Texas. 

Job Summary  

The Economic Justice for Immigrants Managing Attorney will provide substantive legal expertise and oversight to the work of a dynamic team of over 30 attorney and non-attorney fellows. These fellows are hosted by legal service organizations who partner with community-based organizations, offering a variety of legal services to low-income immigrants across multiple geographies in Texas.  

This position will report to the Economic Justice for Immigrants Director. The managing attorney will assist the director in providing leadership to fellows and managing relationships with nearly a dozen key partners. The Managing Attorney will support fellows as they develop and pilot innovative strategies to enhance low-income immigrants’ access to employment law and other targeted basic civil legal services in various Texas geographies, including Dallas, Houston, and northwest Texas. Additionally, the Managing Attorney will assist fellows in researching, resource gathering, and problem-solving client legal issues and needs.  

 Furthermore, the Economic Justice for Immigrants Managing Attorney will play a role in overseeing outcomes, collecting data, and generating reports.  

Location & Travel Demands  

This remote position can be performed from anywhere in Texas. Candidate must live in, or be willing to relocate to, Texas. Travel within Texas is required.  

Key Responsibilities 

• Work with project partners to pilot innovative approaches to legal service delivery, including using community justice workers and pro bono attorneys, to provide immigrants access to a broad range of civil legal matters impacting the economic well-being of low-income immigrants.  

• Provide subject matter expertise on civil legal matters (with a preference in labor related legal matters, including wage-theft, discrimination, and other wage and labor condition violations, but not limited to these subjects) to train, mentor and support attorney and community justice workers.   

• Substantively support and provide leadership to 30+ paid fellows as they share substantive knowledge and learnings to significantly increase the number of low-income immigrants able to obtain access basic civil legal services in labor, housing and in medical-legal partnerships.  

• Work with fellows to find solutions and troubleshoot client’s legal issues.  

• Assist in managing relationships with 8-10 legal service providers and other key partners.  

• Collaborate with project director to ensure project outcomes align with strategic goals through monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment of strategies.    

Qualifications  

• Extensive experience and track record of providing civil legal services to low-income people, especially immigrants, in matters such as employment law, probate law, and consumer law. 

• Exceptional legal skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complex legal problems.  

• Demonstrated leadership and management skills with an ability to act independently, make decisions, and take initiative. 

• Strong legal research and writing ability.  

• Experience in the legal issues and barriers immigrants face when obtaining legal assistance. 

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.  

• J.D. degree and license to practice in Texas.   

• Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and teams to achieve targeted goals and outcomes.   

• Proficiency and comfort with technology and a desire to integrate new digital tools in service delivery.  

• Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred. Vietnamese language preferred. 

• Deep commitment and ability to uphold a nonpartisan stance.  

• Respect for diverse perspectives, and a recognition that inclusive collaboration leads to stronger outcomes.  

• Commitment to fostering a culture that values individuals and perspectives from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences.   

Compensation & Benefits:   

Texas Immigration Law Council’ benefits and salaries are designed to support the needs of all employees, providing outstanding insurance coverage, generous time-off policies, flexible work hours, 401k employer contributions, and ample professional growth opportunities. The salary range for the Economic Justice Managing Attorney is $120,000 to $130,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
